About Research Assistants
Research Assistants are designed to work functionally like ChatGPT, but with information limited to what users loaded into the Tavern Research Library.
Tips & Tricks
Tips to Getting Started
- To get started with a Research Assistant, perhaps especially those made by others in your organization, you may want to ask: "What can I learn from the documents provided?"
- It is helpful to guide the Research Assitant in the desired structure of the answer. For instance, you can write:
- "Please write a tweet that highlights..."
- "Please summarize in 150 words..."
- "Please write a press release that describes..."
Background Information
Because Research Assistants gather information only from the documents in the relevant library connections, they sometimes lack presumed contextual information. It may make sense to: - create a document that defines key terms - include actual proposition / bill / proposal language
Stored Chat History
The chat history is stored such that you can reference previous questions. For example, if you ask about Kamala Harris, a follow up question can just use the pronoun "her" and it will infer who you are asking about.
Time-Based Questions
Try and avoid using terms like "recently". Instead, use actual date ranges in your inquiries.
What did elected officials say about {INSERT SUBJECT} between 07-25-2024 and 07-29-2024?
Polling
It is most helpful to just include the slide deck and memo polling firms provide, as opposed to the full crosstabs.
Citations
The Research Assitant tool provides citations of where an answer was found. Simply click on the citation icon.
![]()
Citations may not appear for the following reasons: - Assistant does not know the answer - Assistant knows the answer, but... - The query is not a question but rather a fun prompt such as, "Hello!" - The query is answerable using only the conversation history
Display as iFrame
In many cases, organizations may want to make their Research Assistant available for wider use. When setting up a Research Assistant, a user can toggle on
To avoid overuse, there is rate limiting by IP address, with allowances for 20 requests per minute.
Sharing
When you set up a Research Assistant, the toggle is by default set to share the tool with other users within your organization. That can be toggled off to make the Research Assistant private to your user.
Research Assistants can be shared with all Tavern Research users. This toggle is only available to Tavern staff. If you would like to make a Research Assistant more widely available outside of your organization, please email support@tavernresearch.com.
